Logie Trout Masters 2008 Winner

Donald Robertson the fishery proprietor, presents Birdie with the Logie Trout Master trophy.

The 2008 Trout Masters final took place at the fishery on 18th April 2009.

The event was attended by 7 of the 12 monthly winners,  who competed against each other to find the champion for the year and to represent the fishery at this years final down at the Grafham fishery in Leicestershire.

The morning session of the competition was fished on the bottom pool where a blustery easterly wind coming straight off the sea kept the air temperature at around the 7 degree mark. This in-turn meant that surface activity was minimal. Most of the anglers fished lures with intermediate or sink tip lines.

The anglers who had earlier drawn peg numbers settled down the task in hand and it was last years winner and defending champion, Darren Thistleton, who got off to a flyer with 8 fish in the morning session.

Angler Alex Bennett finished his morning session with 3 fish which included what would later turn out to be the heaviest fish of the day, a cracking specimen of 8lb 1oz.

With anglers keeping the first three fish for the weigh-in, any additional fish caught added a pound to their total weight. So Alex's 8lber would make up for a lower fish count at the end of proceedings.

The sessions were broken up into 25 minute segments and after a few peg changes, a couple of anglers were beginning to make their mark and pull away from the rest of the field. Amongst the early leaders were Alex Bennett, 'Birdie' and last years winner Darren Thistleton.

At 12:30pm we broke for lunch and we were all treated to a great Bar-B-Q with Donald playing cook. A few liquid libations were consumed which went down a real treat with the anglers.

The top pool was staked out and the anglers got back to the task in hand at 1pm.

Immediately the first session after lunch produced good numbers of  fish and again it was pegs 2 through to 7  that seemed to be getting the best of the fishing.

With the competition coming to a close, our eventual winner broke clear of the field with three late fish. This after having a gripe about a bit of weed in his swim! Turns out the fish must have been sick of the salad in front of him and fancied his fly instead!

After a long day putting up with the chilly wind it was time to blow the whistle and bring the proceedings to a close. We then headed up to the hut for the weigh-in and the presentation of the prizes.

After all the sums were done and double checked it emerged that we had a new champion for the year. The result was as follows:

1st. Birdie

2nd. Alex Bennett

3rd. Darren Thistleton

With the results announced and the trophy presented to the winner, we all had a beer and reflected on what was a great days fishing. Congratulations to Birdie, a worthy winner on the day.

Birdie will not be available to fish in this years grand final at the Grafham fishery, so second place Alex Bennett will represent Logie for the final.

Good luck Alex.
